Hotels that were once castles regularly have a fairytale aura and bring a perfect blend of luxury and glamour with a touch of decadence, and guests there feel royal.
One which has been newly renovated is one in Suhopolje not far from Virovitica in the east of Croatia.
The Janković castle in Suhopolje is a cultural attraction and immovable architectural cultural heritage under protection, while the park around it is a natural park. It was built in the middle of the 18th century, and got its current look at the beginning of the 20th century during the time of Elemir Janković.
Even today, it preserves the patina of old, romantic times.
The Janković Castle offers guests 15 four-star double rooms with breakfast, a lobby bar where you can enjoy local wines, craft beers, liqueurs, brandies, natural homemade juices and desserts created by award-winning pastry chef Sandra Jadek.
There is also a well-equipped conference room, souvenir shop, creative laboratory – playroom for children and 5D cinema for arranged screenings.
The castle was completely renovated by the Virovitica-Podravina County, and in May 2021 the Visitor Centre was opened, modeled on world projects that connect heritage and education in a multimedia and modern way. The architectural renovation project is signed by Studio 3LHD.
”The reconstruction project of the castle was done in cooperation with the conservators, while respecting the historical heritage and preserving the valuable historical elements of the building. The main building has been reconstructed, and both wings have been creatively reinterpreted in a modern way due to irreversible damage to the structure. The chapel and the glacier will be reconstructed in the second phase of realisation,”explains architect Saša Begović, a partner at 3LHD.
Decent, modern, beautiful. The interior design is dominated by natural materials, calm tones and a multitude of playful details, colours, patterns and patterns with a local touch.
“The cohesion of dark and light shades fills the space from the walls to the furniture that has been carefully selected to fit the charisma of the castle. There are many details of local colour, a perfect blend of traditional and modern,” say the Ancona group, who were in charge of the entire interior.
There are so many impressive details, from the beautiful atrium where the 19th century piano is located to the long corridor with a multi-metre timeline that spans three centuries of history, where you will meet historical facts, but also numerous love legends associated with the Jankovic family.
”In the multimedia hall, visitors can get acquainted with the history of the Janković Castle and Suhopolje in an interactive and fun way, as well as the entire tourist offer of Slavonia and Podravina. They can play memory, look for an interesting aristocratic recipe and send to their e-mail, recognise the sounds of birds, explore the bike route, search for QR codes in the park with a tablet and enter the augmented reality in which the count addresses him and reveals various secrets, and at the end, in the final point in front of the Janković castle, take a photo with the count and the countess – something for everyone ,” explains Martina Jakelić, director of the Virovitica-Podravina County Tourist Board.
In the second phase of renovation, the castle will get a wine cellar and a wellness centre. The perfect starting point for rest and exploration of the Noble Route of Virovitica-Podravina County, as yet undiscovered attractions with numerous restored castles and manors.
