NEW YORK — To commemorate the Statehood Day of the Republic of Croatia and Croatian Heritage Day in New York City (NYC) the Consulate General of the Republic of Croatia in New York held a reception at the historic Croatian-owned restaurant Delmonico’s on Thursday, May 16.
“We are proud to be the home of a thriving population of Croatian New Yorkers who have made an indelible, positive impact on life throughout our city. In that spirit, today, it gives me great pleasure to join the Consulate General of Croatia in New York as it commemorates the anniversary of Croatian statehood,“ says Eric Adams, Mayor of New York City.
Along with Consul General Nikica Kopačević, guests were greeted by Pjer Šimunović, Croatian Ambassador to the United States; Leila Kresić-Jurić, Director, Croatian Tourist Board in New York; and Dennis Turčinović and Darko Matošić, owners of Delmonico’s.
Present at the event were members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of the Croatian Fire Brigade from the Vukovar-Srijem and Osijek-Baranja counties, as well as representatives of the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY), led by Daniel Flynn, Chief Fire Marshal, FDNY. Croatians from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio and Virginia were also in attendance.
This year, Mayor Adams proclaimed May 16 as Croatian Heritage Day in NYC.
“Croatian New Yorkers have long enhanced the cultural fabric of the five boroughs, and they will continue to play a crucial role as we take bold steps to forge our bright future. Together, we will ensure that our global metropolis remains an inclusive and dynamic center of opportunity for all,” says Mayor Adams.
