Korčula Island in Croatia is currently seeing its largest ever infrastructure project come to life. They’re building a new port called Polačište, which costs over 25 million euros, to help with traffic problems on the island.
The recently opened Pelješac Bridge has led to a lot of traffic, especially during the busy tourist season. This increased traffic affects both Pelješac and Korčula. The ferries to and from the island face difficulties navigating through the narrow streets of Orebić, and they often get overcrowded. So, people are eagerly awaiting the new Polačište port.
As part of this project, they’ll also upgrade the port in Perna and create a bypass road to ease traffic in Orebić. The work on these projects is set to start in the autumn.
On the other side of the island in Vela Luka, a new port is almost finished and will open in a few months. However, Polačište will remain the main port for passengers.
The new ferry line will provide quicker and more efficient transportation, with a travel time of just seven minutes, making it a vital link between destinations. The new port is expected to be completed by October next year.
