27 May 2024 – A new bridge above the Cetina River connecting the Komorjak and Omiš tunnels on Croatia’s coast has officially opened on Monday to traffic.
This event also marked the inauguration of the Omiš bypass, a long-awaited development that promises to ease the severe traffic congestion experienced during the summer months along the Adriatic highway between Split and Omiš.
The new bridge is 224-metres long and 70 meters above the River Cetina.
“I am delighted that this project is finally completed. This project will undoubtedly benefit the city of Omiš,” said Ivo Tomasović, the Mayor of Omiš.
The project, which began in 2003, faced several interruptions and challenges, including landslides. Despite these hurdles, the completion of the 4-kilometre road segment is a significant achievement.
“We know that the project started in 2003 but was halted. Today, I am pleased to witness the opening of this 4-kilometre stretch. Omiš faces immense traffic pressure during the summer, and we hope this move, perhaps not immediately but in the near future, will significantly improve the quality of life for both residents and visitors.
The project took a bit longer than expected, and we faced issues like landslides, but we hope it will provide added safety for traffic in the Omiš area,” stated Josip Škorić, President of the Management Board of Croatian Roads, daily Jutarnji list reported.
