Lamb from Lika gets EU geographical protection status

The European Commission has approved a new geographical indication from Croatia.
The European Commission on Wednesday decided to add to the register of Protected Geographical Indications (PGI) a new Croatian product – ‘lička janjetina’.
‘Lička janjetina’ is lamb meat from local Lika Curly sheep breed raised in Lika-Senj and Zadar Counties.
“The specific aromatic profile of the cooked meat of ‘Lička janjetina’ is due to the botanical composition of the meadows and pastures on which the Lika lambs are raised. This new denomination will be added to the list of quality products protected at the EU level,” the Commission stated.
EU protected geographical status helps protect product names from misuse and imitation and helps consumers by giving them information concerning the specific character of the products.
Lička janjetina becomes the 20th Croatian product which has been protected, others include pršut from Dalmatia, Drniš, Krk and Istria, olive oil from Cres, Krk, Solta and Korčula, mandarins from Neretva, Poljički soparnik, sour cabbage from Ogulin, Kulen from Baranja and Slavonian, cabbage from Varazdin, Slavonian honey, salt and lamb from Pag, turkey from Zagorje and potatoes from Lika.
