Croatians in California celebrate Statehood Day

Croatia celebrated Statehood Day on Monday for the 31st time since declaring independence.
It was not only in Croatia that they day was observed, with celebrations taking place around the world where there are Croatian communities.
One of those celebrations was in San Pedro, California, where after a two-year break because of the pandemic, a large number of Croatian-Americans and their guests gathered for an unforgettable extended weekend of Statehood Day celebrations.
More than 35,000 Croats and their descendants live in San Pedro.
On the first day of the celebration, a football tournament was held for both children and adults. The winners of this year’s tournament were the NK Adriatic team.
The Consul General of the Croatian Consulate in Los Angeles, Renee Pea, officially opened the formal Statehood Day celebration.
The President of the Croatian-American House, Frane Jerkovic, also addressed the crowd.
As part of the celebration, a competition was held under the auspices of the Croatian-American Home “Creativity Scholarship Contest for Celebrating Croatian Culture”.
The winners were Katija Baric, Kyle Baric and Madison Purves.
Kolo group, Sv. Ante, led by Heidi Granic, magnified the celebration with a series of dances by Croats from the Bay of Kotor.
After their performance, the members of the Kolo group danced before the hosts and guests sang Croatian songs until late into the night with Klapa Samoana, Petra and DJ Luka.
