Traditional decorated Easter eggs display opens in Croatian city of Koprivnica

KOPRIVNICA, 25 March 2021 – For the 14th year in a row, the Tourist Board of Koprivnica-Križevci County in Croatia has opened its tradition outdoor exhibition of large decorated Easter eggs titled ‘Pisanica od srca’ (Painted Easter egg from the heart).
The traditional Croatian Easter custom is to paint Easter eggs and gift them to others. Painting Easter eggs with various techniques has a long tradition in the Koprivnica-Križevci County, and since 2008 it has had the status of a Croatian cultural intangible asset.
The most famous masters of painting eggs are from Molvi and Podravske Sesvete.
The exhibition of the pisanica painted by artists has opened is currently being held on the main square in Koprivnica.
The Koprivnica-Križevci Tourist Board started the ‘Painted Easter egg from the heart’ project with the desire that large Easter eggs were sent all over Croatia and the rest of the world as not only a recognisable symbol of everyday life and tradition of the Podravina region, but also as a sign of friendship, love and joy of Easter.
The decorated eggs have been gifted to European cities be displayed over the years during Easter. Cities the Croatian pisanica have been sent to over the years include Munich, Rome, New York, Prague, Vienna, Milan and even the Vatican.
The exhibition is open until 5 April.
