A protected Croatian potato variety has been named among the the Top 10 in the world.
Taste Atlas has ranked the top 10 potato varieties globally, highlighting their unique characteristics and versatility in various culinary applications.
In 8th place were Lički krumpir, or potatoes from Croatia’s Lika region.
Potatoes originating from Lika stand out for their elevated dry matter content, translating to increased levels of starch, vitamins, minerals, and fiber, Taste Atlas noted.
Sporting yellow to brown skin and vibrant white to yellow flesh, these potatoes possess a distinctive floury taste owing to their rich starch composition.
However, this starch abundance also renders them prone to breaking down if overcooked. Exclusive cultivation, including planting, hilling, and harvesting, occurs solely within the region of Lika, situated in southwestern Croatia.
Lički krumpir are a protected food product of Croatia at the European level. The Croatian indigenous product is registered and protected in the EU common market, where it received the designation of origin and geographical indication in September 2015.
Lika, a traditional region of Croatia, is situated between the Velebit and Plješevica mountains, with its boundaries marked by the Ogulin-Plaški basin to the northwest and the Malovan pass to the southeast.
Today, much of Lika’s territory is incorporated into Lika-Senj County, encompassing towns like Gospić, Otočac, and Gračac. The renowned Plitvice Lakes National Park is located within Lika’s borders.
Yukon Gold potatoes from Canada took top spot on the list, followed by Papa criolla from Colombia and Patata Kato Nevrokopiou from Greece in third spot.
