Authentic Croatian cuisine at ‘best of Croatia’ festival

Vukovar expects thousands of visitors from all parts of Croatia when the 6th “SVI zaJEDNO HRVATSKO NAJ” (All together the best of Croatia) festival starts on Friday, May 3rd.
This year the festival will attract even more attention by showcasing authentic Croatian dishes.
The “SVI zaJEDNO HRVATSKO NAJ” festival, now in its sixth year, of Intangible Croatian cultural heritage, tourist events, attractions, and destinations will take place from May 3rd – 5th and will primarily attract enthusiasts of tradition and Croatian intangible cultural heritage.
But this year, this unique and widely known festival will also be attended by numerous enthusiasts of domestic cuisine and beverages because this year’s festival theme particularly presents traditional and indigenous Croatian dishes, bringing the richness of scents and flavours from Prigorje, Zagorje, Baranja, Moslavina, and other regions of Croatia.

In Vukovar, traditional dishes from the Vrbovec region will be presented by cooks from the “What Our Ancestors Ate” Women’s Association from Vrbovec, where the eponymous, oldest Croatian gastronomic event is held every year.

Vrbovec pastries, turkey with mlinci (traditional pasta), strudels, štrukli (cheese strudels), and fileki (meat and dough dumplings) are just some of the local specialties from the Vrbovec region that will be on offer.

Participants of the Festival from Bilje, specifically from the Vardarac Hunting Society, will prepare traditional Croatian dishes with paprika and will also present the traditional event “Paprika Fest,” which has been held for many years in the Baranja village of Lug.

And this year, there will be plenty of cooking with paprika in Vukovar. During the second day of the festival, on Saturday, May 4th, a grand culinary competition in cooking čobanac (a meat stew) will be held along the Danube promenade.
The čobanac masters will cook from 2 PM to 4 PM, after which the judging panel will announce the winners and award appropriate recognitions.

Throughout all three days of the festival, visitors will be able to visit a special Eco-Ethno Fair, where they can taste and purchase authentic products primarily from Slavonia, but also from other parts of Croatia.
Slavonian honey of protected origin, various cheeses, lavender products, aronia products, and more will be available. Wine lovers will also have a treat as they can enjoy the finest wines from Srijem and Podunavlje presented by local winemakers as part of the Festival.

Slavonia has always been a favourite wine and gastronomic destination, and Vukovar is a paradise for gourmets. Whether it’s domestic kulen (spicy sausage), fish paprikaš, grilled carp, or čobanac, everyone will find their favorite among Slavonian traditional specialties, which will be abundant during this year’s Festival!
The festival is a unique Croatian festival that showcases protected Croatian intangible cultural heritage from UNESCO’s list, alongside the most attractive tourist events and cultural-tourist attractions from all over Croatia.

Year after year, guests from all over Croatia, as well as neighboring countries and our diaspora, come to the Festival, which has become a true tradition of Vukovar.

The organizers of this year’s Festival, as every year, are the City of Vukovar, the Vukovar Tourist Board, the agency Organizers Without Borders, and the Croatian House “Mother’s Story,” and this year, the Festival’s partners include the Bilogora-Bjelovar Tourist Board, the Premium Vukovar Cooperative, the Vukovar City Museum, the Croatian House Vukovar, the Zrinski Hunting Society, and the Vukovar Water Tower.
