Last month the City of Zagreb announced that it will be introducing free public transport for residents over the age of 65. Today, the City authorities explained the process involved.
The right to free transportation for fellow citizens who have reached the age of 65 and have residency in the City of Zagreb will be valid from June 1, 2024, the City said on Monday.
Considering that this right applies to nearly 160,000 residents of Zagreb, Zagrebački električni tramvaj (ZET), the transit authority responsible for public transport in Zagreb, has established a transitional period during which free use of transportation services is possible upon presentation of a valid ID card showing residency in the City of Zagreb and proof of age over 65.
The transitional period is effective from June 1st to September 30th, 2024.
During this period, Zagreb residents aged 65 and over can obtain a free annual pass valid for 12 months at ZET sales points.
For detailed information on how to claim the right to free transportation, individuals can visit ten ZET retail locations throughout Zagreb or access the information on the website www.zet.hr.
“I am pleased to announce that, thanks to the recovery of the city’s finances, this year we are able to offer free ZET transportation to all Zagreb residents aged 65 and above. With this decision, we join a series of European cities such as Lisbon, Madrid, Ljubljana, Prague, or Budapest, which facilitate mobility for older people and reduce their cost of living,” said Mayor Tomašević said when he announced the initiative.
