In a surprising fashion twist, the crochet doily, relegated to the realm of vintage decor, has staged a comeback, all thanks to the latest sensation from Croatia, Baby Lasagna. 

Known for his eclectic style, Baby Lasagna not only captured the hearts of Croatians but has also sparked a global fascination with his unique fashion choices.

A doily, traditionally an ornamental to place under things in the house like glasses, bowls, vases, or often used as table centrepieces, have found their way back into fashion thanks to the Croatian Eurovision runner-up.

Baby Lasagna’s recent wardrobe transformation, swapping out conventional attire for a crochet doily shirt, garnered widespread attention and admiration. His eye-catching outfit, embellished with crochet doilies, became a signature element of his stage presence.

They had a wide range of purposes

Antonija Bucić, a young Croatian designer, deserves the credit for Baby Lasagna’s outfit, meticulously crafting each piece with hours of dedication. Bucić’s efforts, spanning weeks of meticulous work, resulted in the Croatian being ranked among the best-dressed at Eurovision.

Valentina Pliško, another talented designer, has played a significant role in showcasing the cultural richness of Croatia through her innovative costume designs. Inspired by traditional Istrian lacework, Pliško’s creations feature handmade crochet details, adding a touch of nostalgia to contemporary fashion.

The nostalgic appeal of crochet doilies, once a staple in households adorned by grandmothers’ handiwork, has resonated with audiences of all ages. 

This was evident during the big homecoming on Zagreb’s main square on Sunday when 10,000 people turned up, many sporting real crochet doilies, or on print on t-shirts.
